Printing the Self-Test Pattern for Hewlett Packard 500 ® Series Printers
To make sure your printer is working properly, follow the steps below to print a printer self test:
1 - Turn off the printer
2 - Press and hold the select button on the printer control panel while turning on the printer.
3. Release the select button when the ready light turns on.
Paper loads and a color and black printer self test pattern prints.
The color pattern prints first. The printer's self test pattern
may vary slightly from lines across the page including numbers
for each of the print cells. HP numbers the print cells from 1
to 48. Each one of the print cells should show in the diagonal
line running across the page. One or two gaps in the line will
not be detrimental to your printing but 12 or more will cause
streaks to appear even in the least important text printing.

If any of these tests do not print, try the solution given next.
If you want to clean the print head from the operator panel, follow these steps.
1 - Make sure the green power light is on
2 - Press and hold the Resume button for at least two seconds until the printer beeps twice.
The power light will blink for several seconds while the print head is being cleaned.
Perform the print head cleaning only when you encounter a print quality problem. Unnecessary and repetitious cleaning will waste ink.
If you execute the print head cleaning while paper is manually loaded, the printer will eject the paper and then perform the cleaning.
